A popular classic sports car with a reputation for performance, this particular Triumph TR2 is an excellent example of the model. Its exterior presents well and the interior has been beautifully refreshed to its original style. Only a total of 8,636 TR2’s were built before the arrival of the TR3 in 1955, making this example a favourable and sought after investment today.

With a 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine and a four-speed manual transmission, the performance of this sports roadster is impressive to say the least. The TR2 was the most affordable car at the time capable of reaching 100mph (160km/h). It features a wishbone front suspension on coil springs with a leaf-sprung live axle at the rear.

Accompanied by a Triumph TR2 “Instruction Manual” and extensive mechanical receipts from a previous long-term owner of 42 years. This is an excellent opportunity to own a desirable piece of British motoring history.

Standard Motor Company’ Chairman, Sir John Black wanted a sports car to compete with the success of the MG TC - especially in the United States. After an unsuccessful attempt to buy the Morgan Motor Company he set about designing an affordable sports car utilising a shortened version of the Standard Eight chassis. The car was improved in appearance with a new longer ladder-type chassis and bigger boot and was previewed at the 1953 Geneva Motor Show with great success. 0 to 100km/ was quoted at 12.5-secs. Focusing on the cars rapid entry into the US market, Standard Triumph had given little thought to their new roadster’s competition potential. However, custom TR2’s would take 1st, 2nd and 5th placings in the prestigious RAC Rally and a great showing in the Mille Miglia and Le Man 24-hour, giving the sportster a strong performance reputation that would carry into later series. In Australia, Doug Whiteford also had great success behind the wheel of a TR2 winning the 1955 Moomba TT at Albert Park in Victoria.
